St Paul's Chapel (closeup) |
This historic chapel (standing on this site since 1776) miraculously remained unharmed during the 9/11 disaster, and later offered a site of respite for exhausted rescue workers. Countless shirts, banners, flags, hats, photos, and other items of all sorts remain hung on the railings all around the chapel, many from well-wishers around the world, some from victims, victims' families, and possibly rescue workers themselves. This has become a sort of shrine to the disaster and its victims.
